About Dave Porter
The pain and trauma that I have experienced in my life has helped me gain an appreciation for my addictions. When I was 2 years old, my younger brother passed away, and when I was 20 years old my mother died tragically in a car accident.
I had only so much capacity to hold the pain and challenges of losing my brother and my mother. In both cases, I was still young and my brain was developing. All this pain/challenge/trauma was too much for me to handle, so I turned to alcohol to help me soothe the pain I was going through and to help me cope with the challenges it brought up.
I drank for many years. The alcohol was my support system and helped me at a really tough time in my life. Fortunately, I found yoga and that helped me find a way to work with my pain and suffering more with more conscious awareness. It helped me connect back into my body so that I could widen the window of tolerance for the pain I was going through, and receive the wisdom in my pain.
Yoga builds our capacity to hold the challenge and pain. After many years of yoga and personal work, I stopped drinking and became more present, focused, connected, grounded and aware. The yoga practice was extremely powerful in helping me through my challenges, and I believe that it can help you deal with your challenges too.
I have been in the yoga world for a long time. I was one of the founders of the largest yoga company in the US, CorePower Yoga, and have been teaching yoga for over 20 years. My experience as a yoga teacher, a teacher of yoga teachers, a mentor, a yoga studio founder and owner, a husband and a father have all helped me get to a place where I am committed to serve and support other people who are ready to make a change in their lives and live a more extraordinary life.
I am a teacher who understands the human condition and I want to help you. I have been through a lot personally and have come out the other side stronger, clearer and grounded, and ready to serve. Using yoga and my life experience, I want to help you transform your challenges. Remember, it takes time to make these changes. It took me 15 years from when I started yoga until I stopped drinking. So let’s get started today so that rather than just going through the motions of life, you can reconnect to your authentic self and get back to living your life at 100%. Because life is short.
